It appears many Ghanaians are unhappy with the suggestion of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to rename Ghana’s premier University, the University of Ghana after Joseph Boakye Danquah.
The President over the weekend indicated that the contributions of JB Danquah to the establishment of the University of Ghana cannot be underestimated.
He added that there is the possibility that in the future, the famous university could be named after JB Danquah. He adds that JB Danquah made a strong commitment to galvanize the Ghanaian populace to ensure the university is established.
But in a quick reaction, Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr. Clement Apeak indicated that renaming the university was unnecessary. He indicates that the potential decision by the President is unacceptable.
“Remember that JB Danquah belongs to the president’s family and this is not the first time that we have picked up signals that if the president has his way, UG will be named after JB Danquah.”
“I believe that that ought not to be the case. There is a general tendency that we are witnessing where President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo has tried to eulogize his ancestry and to give his forebears a prominent place in Ghana’s history,” he indicated.
