Corruption in Ghana has long been discussed with many indicating it is difficult to fight the canker. Many institutions in Ghana have been tagged as corrupt with many losing trust in them.
There are many Ghanaians who believe it is difficult to receive the needed support of they don’t pay bribes. All efforts by government to fight the canker has proven unsuccessful.
The United Nations has released a report capturing top bribe taking institutions in Ghana. The United Nations conducted the survey in Ghana in 2021.
The data captures the lands commission which is under the ministry of lands and natural resources as the leading institution in taking that takes bribe before rendering services with an average size of 1669.
The judiciary, including Prosecutors, magistrates, and judges followed the lands commission as another institution where bribes are taken before services are rendered with an average size of 1,204.
The Ghana Immigration Service followed the chat with 950 average bribe size after the judiciary whilst institutions under the local government followed at the 4th position.
GRA customs officers, 5th; Passport agency officials, 6th; teachers, lecturers and professors, 7th; public utility officials, 8th; doctors, nurses and midwives, 9th and officials of Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, 10th.
The survey also disclosed that most of these institutions take bribes or request for them in 70 to 97 per cent of the public services they offer.
Also, the Oti Region was the region that had the most requests for bribes with public officers taking or asking for bribes in over 91 per cent of their duties; followed by Northern Region (89.2%), Upper East (83.4%); North East (81.2%); Upper West (80.3%) and Ashanti (70.4%).
