Police gun down suspect in Labone robbery

According to a police statement, on January 30, 2026, the IGP referred the petition to the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters for further investigations.

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has launched investigations into a robbery attack at Labone following the death of a key suspect during a police intelligence operation in the Central Region.

The development comes after a petition filed by Madam Christiana Frimpong, a 77-year-old resident of Labone, was referred for investigation by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu.

According to a police statement, on January 30, 2026, the IGP referred the petition to the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters for further investigations.

The petition detailed a violent robbery incident which occurred on December 4, 2025, at the complainant’s residence.

Madam Frimpong is reported to have told police that armed men attacked her in her bedroom, restrained her by tying her hands and legs, and covered her face with a plastic bag before fleeing with a Toyota Hilux pickup with registration number GW 9834-25, an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and other personal belongings.
A police statement added that investigations and intelligence gathering efforts led to a major breakthrough in the case.

“Following weeks of investigations and intelligence gathering, a police team led by ASP James Atampuri proceeded to Danso near Bawjiase in the Awutu Senya District in the early hours of February 6, 2026, at about 1:30 a.m.

“After four days of sustained intelligence operations, the team identified and located a suspect, Clement Kofi Aidoo, also known by the aliases Yaw, Paddy and Joseph Abequaye,” the statement said.
According to police, the suspect was shot during the operation and later pronounced dead.

“The suspect was rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty. His body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
“During the operation, police retrieved the stolen Toyota Hilux (GW 9834-25), several documents, and the complainant’s mobile phone. Also recovered were a Voter’s ID card and a Police ID card bearing the name No. 48935 G/Sgt Daniel Kusi Appiah. All recovered items have been retained as exhibits to support ongoing investigations.

“Subsequent investigations led to the invitation of No. 48935 G/Sgt Daniel Kusi Appiah, stationed at the Kaneshie Divisional Headquarters, to the AARU at the CID Headquarters on February 6, 2026.”
G/Sgt Appiah explained that in November 2025, while searching for a house help for his ailing father, he was introduced to the suspect through KKN Domestic and Recruitment Agency at Bubuashie.

The officer stated that the suspect began work at his Kaneshie residence on November 1, 2025, but allegedly absconded on November 14, 2025, while assisting his father to seek medical care at the Ridge Hospital.

The suspect reportedly fled with a Toyota Camry saloon car with registration number GC 123-12, police and voter ID cards, a cash sum of GH¢12,200.00, and other personal effects.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Kaneshie Police Station, where investigations revealed that the suspect was a native of Bontroase in the Central Region and that his real name was Joseph Obessi, also known as Paddy.

“On January 25, 2026, the suspect was reportedly spotted driving the stolen Toyota Camry at Bontroase. A police pursuit ensued, but he abandoned the vehicle at Kojoacquah Village and escaped.”
