JM returns fire on Akuffo Addo over Gyekye Quayson ‘Prisoner’ comment

Both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) are wrapping up campaign at the Assin North Constituency for their candidate to win the Tuesday by–election.

The president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo told constituents in Assin North not to be moved by the tactics of the NDC and its candidate.

He responded to comments by Mr. Gyakye Quayson indicating he would be voted for even in prison. Nana Addo Dankwa believes it is not right for the people of Assin North to be led by a prisoner.

“He says he will be voted for even if he is in prison. That cannot be right, Assin North cannot vote for a prisoner as their member of the parliament whilst there is someone (the NPP candidate) who can do the job. We don’t need a prisoner to lead the people of Assin North. We need someone who can come back to the people after the election,” he indicated.

In a quick response, former President John Dramani Mahama indicated that it is not right for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo to refer to the NDC candidate as a prisoner. According to him, the case is still in court and the NDC candidate has not been proven guilty yet.

“The president is wrong if he says that. He is prejudicing the case in court. The case is still in court and he is not a prisoner, he has not been convicted, he has not been proven guilty and even professors of law have indicated that the Supreme Court erred in the judgment and so he is not a prisoner and if the president said so it’s just unfortunate,” he added.
