Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is NPP flagbearer for 2028

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has once again been entrusted with leading the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana’s presidential election scheduled for December 7, 2028.

He secured 100,120 votes, representing 56.39% of the total votes cast, to claim the party’s flagbearer position. His closest rival, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, garnered 41,856 votes, equivalent to 23.57%. Other aspirants included Dr. Bryan Acheampong with 32,985 votes (18.58%), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum with 1,676 votes (0.94%), and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong with 375 votes (0.21%).

This marks the second occasion that Dr. Bawumia will represent the NPP in Ghana’s presidential race. He previously contested in 2024 against now-President John Mahama but was unsuccessful.

Some analysts argue that Dr. Bawumia’s prior exposure as the party’s standard-bearer strengthens the NPP’s prospects for the 2028 election. They further note that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) may face a disadvantage, as President Mahama has completed his term, necessitating the presentation of a new candidate.

Others caution, however, that the outcome of the 2028 election will depend not only on the NDC’s candidate but also on the party’s organizational capacity, the credibility of the candidates, and which party the electorate perceives as best aligned with their interests.

The flagbearer election on January 31, 2026, was largely peaceful, with only a minor incident reported in the Ablekuma North Constituency involving the party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate, Akua Afriyie.
