Alan K may cause political havoc to the NPP – Haruna Iddursu

Former minority leader and a leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Haruna Iddrusu has indicated that the breakaway of Mr. Alan Kyerematen may cause some political havoc in the 2024 general elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

There have been divided opinions among political actors since Mr. Alan Kyerematen, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party announced his decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 election. He also announced his resignation from the New Patriotic Party and indicated that some persons have hijacked the party. Whilst some believe Alan Kyerematen may cause the NPP to lose votes in the 2024 election, others have indicated that he may have no impact on the fortunes of the NPP.

Speaking in an interview with Joynews, Mr. Haruna Iddrusu indicated that the NPP must be worried with the breakaway of Alan Kyerematen. He adds that Alan Kyerematen in likely to cause some police damage and havoc to the NPP should he be able to grab about 3 to 5 percent of the total votes in the 2024 general election.

“As a stalwart of the party, they must be worried whether he’s following we go with him or not. I have seen a number of MPs being loyal to him who have said that loyalty should never be to a person or an individual, it should be to the institution of the party,” he indicated.

He adds that Alan Kyerematen is likely to win the support of some members of parliament who may want to breakaway with him and that would be a disaster for the NPP.

“So we may have a situation where for the first time in Parliament, the number of independents [candidates] may increase depending upon where they come from.”

The former Minority leader is urging the NPP leadership to rethink about the issues to improve its democratic processes.
