A second-hand clothes seller has been electrocuted at the Takoradi Market Circle following a heavy downpour on Tuesday night.

The deceased, a man in his forties popularly known as “Omama,” operated near Kendicks Pharmacy at the Market Circle in Takoradi. He was pronounced dead at the scene before police arrived. His body has since been conveyed to the mortuary for further investigations.

The incident reportedly occurred after metal pillars at one of the shops became live following the rainfall.

An eyewitness, Nana Kwame, told Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show, that the deceased had closed from work and was preparing to go home when the tragedy struck.

“He is a well-known second-hand clothes seller here in Takoradi. He had closed from work, packed his clothes, and was heading home when the incident occurred,” he said.

“One of the shops has metal pillars, and after the rainfall yesterday, the pillars became live and started electrocuting anyone who touched them. One of his colleagues first touched one of the metal pillars and felt an electric shock. He quickly warned the deceased not to touch it, but it appears he did not hear the warning.

“Unfortunately, he held the metal pillar and was electrocuted. He died instantly. The police were later invited to the scene, and the body was conveyed to the mortuary for further investigations.”
The tragic incident has thrown the trading community into mourning, with many of the deceased’s colleagues reportedly keeping their shops closed on Wednesday.
