Jean Mensah deletes 15,000 names from voter’s register

The Electoral Commission of Ghana is currently preparing for the 2024 general election which is almost near.

Following the 2020 elections and its associated challenges, the electoral Commission set up a review Commission mandated to ensure illegible names are deleted from the register.

The Commission has completed its work and indicated that some 15,000 names have been found to be in the register illegally and as such must be deleted.

Jean Mensah, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission indicates in a media briefing that the work of the Commission has led to the expungement of 15, 000 names of minors, foreigners, and other illegible voters from the register.

She indicates that the ECs proposal to use the Ghana card as the sole document for registration falls in the background of the challenges faced in the 2020 elections.

She adds that the Electoral Commission is positioned to ensure elections conducted in the country are credible, free, and fair.

“Indeed, a credible voter’s register is (sic) for a credible election. As a Commission that is determined to conduct credible, transparent, fair, and peaceful elections, we were keen to establish and uphold the integrity of the foundational document, which is the voters register, hence our proposal to use the Ghana Card as the sole document for identification of a person’s citizenship, as well as age,” she indicated

According to her, over 40,000 minors were challenged during the work of the Commission but names of only 15000 miners and foreigners were expunged.

“Our experience from the 2020 registrations exercise showed that several minors and foreigners, using the window of the guarantor system, found their way onto our roll. To rid the register of minors and foreigners in 2020, the Electoral Commission established the District Registration Review Committees which worked for several weeks to delete the names of minors and foreigners from the register… during the registration, some 40,000 minors and foreigners were challenged, and we managed to expunge some 15,000 minors and foreigners from the register,” she explained,” she added.
