38 fishermen rescued after pirate attack off Senya Bereku

The victims, who were travelling in two locally manufactured canoes, were safely brought ashore through a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service Marine Police Unit and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Thirty-eight fishermen who were left stranded at sea following an armed robbery attack off the coast of Senya Bereku in the Central Region have been rescued.

The victims, who were travelling in two locally manufactured canoes, were safely brought ashore through a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service Marine Police Unit and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The rescue mission was launched after reports indicated that a group of fishermen had been attacked and abandoned at sea.

Preliminary information suggests that the fishermen had set out on a routine fishing expedition in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, 2026. They were reportedly ambushed by armed men in a black boat while returning to shore.

According to Citi Newsroom, the attackers fired warning shots before seizing outboard motors and generator sets, leaving the fishermen stranded in the water.

The incident has heightened anxiety within coastal fishing communities, amid growing concerns over increasing attacks at sea.

Additional canoes linked to the incident have since been located. The Ghana Armed Forces earlier launched a separate search operation at dawn, approximately 35 nautical miles offshore, to rescue any remaining victims.

In a statement issued on Thursday, February 26, 2026, the Armed Forces urged the public to remain calm and assured that further updates would be provided as the situation unfolds.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigations Department has begun taking statements from the rescued fishermen as investigations into the attack continue.
